Since Communist China’s inception over seventy years ago, China’s reunification with Taiwan has been its paramount foreign policy objective. Chinese President Xi Jingping has made repeated statements that China’s patience for Taiwan to accept its offer of peaceful reunification, which it first called for over four decades ago, is running out and that China might opt to pursue the military option within the next few years if it does not. Over the past two decades, China has greatly increased its amphibious assault capabilities and has engaged in numerous amphibious assault exercises in preparation for an invasion of Taiwan.
Meanwhile, the frequency and scale of Chinese fighter and bomber incursions into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) and large PLA Navy exercises off the coast of Taiwan during the past year, including their newest aircraft carriers, have been unprecedented, with more than 1,400 incursions since Joe Biden became President. These moves and other related measures suggest that China may well be planning to attack Taiwan very soon.
