This is a horrendous decision which will have terrible long-term consequences, as well as destroying Trump's credibility. Extremely disappointing.

It's a huge defeat for Trump but they're spinning it as a win trying to hide how bad the terms are for us. It's not too late for Trump. All he has to do is pull all US personnel out of Ukraine. He could refuse to authorize arms sales to Ukraine until Zelenksy leaves office. But I think it's unlikely he will do that. He is acting like he doesn't know what to do but as I noted in my article the path to peace in Ukraine is a relatively simple and easy one not complicated like Trump has been misinformed.

David, Thank you so much for this article. Honestly I cannot read it through the first time, I will come back to finish it later. It’s so painful to face the facts.

What happened to President Trump? Is he compromised by a blackmail to change his direction by 180 degrees?

Is someone holding a gun to Trumps head, or have we all been sold down the river ???

I think Trump is the victim of bad advice from his neocon Cabinet members which I predicted would try to sabotage his peace efforts with Russia. Looks like they succeeded.

Look no further than the Epstein operation for Trump’s “motivation” to satiate the neocon’s and their traitorous policies.

I fear you've been sold down the river, John.

Trump is just exploiting the situation to suit whoever he feels he wants to side with. I don't think he is any kind of victim. If he is listening to bad advice, it's because he is choosing to do so. No gun to head required.

The USA should gain nothing from its warmongering and the deaths of Ukrainians and Russians other than prosecution as a terrorist state and paying from American pockets for the harm it has done. But perhaps Trump is America’s punishment. Remember, “homies next”.

I don't like any levers of action between Ukrainian Biden Criminals and the Good Ukrainians there can be no negatives in the deal for us and Russians who just want it to stop. We Hope and PRAY

The only way Trump can save Ukraine is to force Zelensky to accept a peace deal with Russia by threatening to cut off Ukraine's Starlink access if he doesn't.

Thank you. Excellent article. It will be interesting to see what the dissident analysts who have been insisting recently that President Trump was "personally" opposed to war and that he was playing 3 or 4-D chess will say now. Maybe infinite-D chess?

It turns out it was 2-D chess all along but Trump still has the ability to fire his neocon advisors and return to a more rational, realist and America First foreign policy.

Surely this trump decision makes a US war with Russia over Ukraine more likely ?

Not likely but possible. I think Trump has repaired our relationship enough with Trump that war with Russia is unlikely and I don't think Trump would defend Europe against a Russian attack if it was provoked by our NATO partners.

Responsible Statecraft is reporting that the deal "does not commit the U.S. to fight for Ukraine, or to back up a European “reassurance force” for Ukraine. And NATO membership remains off the table. Given its basic positions, there is no chance of the Trump administration shifting on these points."

As long as U.S. troops are NOT sent to Ukraine and we don't even attempt to admit them into NATO, we may not have to worry about a direct war with Russia.

However, David's concern that this will turn into Trump's Vietnam is spot-on.

I agree with that assessment but the chances of war between Russia and European NATO will likely increase the longer the war goes on and the more territory Ukraine loses and the closer it is to collapsing militarily as does the possibility that Trump might be misled by his neocon advisors into joining such a conflict.

In my book Trump's motives were and are always dubious. However, I was fully on board with his original plans for a peace deal in Ukraine, whatever his motives.

I'm not convinced this is about Trump listening to bad advice. If that's true then he seems to fall for bad advice so often it calls into account his capabilities to be leading the US.

Sadly it seems that nothing has really changed in US foreign policy. Your administrations, both Democrats and Republicans, are filled with people that want to exploit the rest of the world as part of keeping the 1% happy and content. The rest of you don't really matter except when it comes to elections and your vote is won with made up stories.

It's all been done before and the US is following the playbook that the British Empire followed .... a playbook we (I'm a Brit) almost perfected ........... and one the US thinks it will.

I had high hopes for a peace settlement. Sigh.

Yes in 1945, the US adopted a policy of global hegemony viewing the entire world minus the Communist bloc as a US sphere of influence with disastrous results since the collapse of the USSR leading to countless unnecessary wars. Trump unfortunately is highly susceptible to changing his mind due to the advice and counsel of his Ukraine First and Israel First America Last senior neocon advisors.
